FIRST Fair

Are you ready for FIRST Fair this Saturday, Oct. 20th at Gladstone High School?  We are excited for our new class offerings as well as the continued support for our core classes.  Encourage your students and mentors to take advantage of this opportunity if possible.  We hope to offer a virtual option for next year.

Feel free to bring your own lunch for your team.  The cafeteria will be open and available for you.  Interested in purchasing lunch?  We will have a taco truck in the parking lot during the lunch hour.

DW Fritz still has a few workstations available for teams.  If your team is in need please let me know!

See you at 9:30!

LEAP

For those either taking part or considering taking part in LEAP (Linking Engineering and Philanthropy) this year with Mercy Corps it’s getting to be time to get serious.

FIRST Fair LEAP Q&A

The nice folks from Mercy Corps will be at FIRST Fair at Gladstone High Saturday Oct 20th at 10:00am to answer all your questions and fill in some of the blanks you didn’t know you had.  We’ll record this session and post links to it later in the weekend but seeing it live, and asking questions, is much better.  The session will not be livestreamed but the recording will be up on www.team1540.org/leap.  If you are coming to the Q&A, be sure you’ve watched the kickoff webinar and read the rules at the above site before you come.  Even better would be to have an idea about a project or two you are considering.  That way you can bounce it off of the Mercy Corps folks (in public or private.)  They won’t tell you if an idea is good or bad but they will tell you questions you’ll want to make sure you address.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

The deadline is Nov 1st for free registration to LEAP.

OMSI Ask an Expert Nights

Just a quick announcement. There are still seats available for all of the Expert Night with Dr. Michael Barratt at OMSI tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday at 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM. Please make sure your team is signed up for this event!  This is an event  that is open to all teams FLL through FRC.

Alumni Virtual Chat # 4 - Guest Speaker: Andy Parker
Get excited! Andy Parker is an alumnus who is currently in law school and will talk about his work in public and political advocacy and outreach, an important area of FIRST. This interactive, informal conversation will include introductions of all attendees and a Q&A session.

With the midterm elections just around the corner, this is a particularly topical alumni chat! For those who are wary of politics, have no fear – none of that will be discussed except for the guest speaker’s outreach work at the White House!

Please feel free to invite fellow alumni or students and bring your questions! After the last chat on financial careers, who’s looking forward to learning about another unique career pathway?

About the Speaker:
Andy Parker grew up in Corvallis, Oregon and joined Corvallis High School's FRC team (997) in 2004. From 2004-2007 he held electrical, fundraising, and drive team positions, and he served as team president in his senior year. As an undergraduate at Stanford University, Andy developed an interest in politics and government and found that the skills he developed through FIRST - teamwork, strategy, execution, and evaluation - carried over to this new context. Andy majored in Political Science and moved to Washington, D.C. after graduation. He served in outreach and public engagement roles in the Obama White House and the Department of Defense before leaving D.C. for a Master's in Public Policy at the University of Cambridge, where he focused on manufacturing and technology policy. Andy is currently a third-year student at Yale Law School and is pursuing interests in state and local government. In his free time, Andy enjoys travelling, bowling, and stand-up comedy.
