Coaches, I hope your team is excited about the game challenge for this season.  Both Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers speeches were applicable to all FIRST teams, regardless of the program.

Volunteering

FIRST LEGO League needs your help at the FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournaments on January 13 & 14 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. A part of our event is showcasing the FIRST high school programs for an hour after the competitions end. If your team and a robot are available from 3-4pm on Saturday, January 13th and/or Sunday, January 14th please sign up to share with this form.  Each day a different group of 60 teams will be competing for the chance to go to the World Festival in Houston. Oregon only gets to send 2 teams. 1 will be selected each day.  Teams are needed to demonstrate on both days.

Volunteers are still needed for both days of this event. Sign up on www.firstinspires.org if you are over 13 years old. We love having FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition team members serve as pit runners, judge queuers, practice table monitors, referee assistants, game announcers, live stream and sound help, security, and other roles. We welcome your coaches and mentors to fill any event volunteer role. We still need adults unaffiliated with FIRST LEGO League to serve as judges.

National Instruments


National Instruments wants to let you all know that we have created some 1-hour LabVIEW workshops and trainings that are available for anyone in the FRC community to use. Our hope is to make it easier for students and mentors to host workshops and to get FRC folks more comfortable and confident with LabVIEW.

 The first 3 are from a series of FUN (FIRST Updates Now) Twitch streams that NI’s April Riddett,  FIRST Championship lead CSA, is hosting.

The 4th one was created by NI’s lead LabVIEW for FRC developer and presented as a workshop at both 2017 FIRST Championships.

 Beginning at kickoff, they will be hosted and available for download on our FRC Resource Hub at ni.com/frc. You are welcome to edit them however you like and get them in a format that makes the most sense to you.

Gene Haas Foundation Grant


The primary purpose of the Gene Haas Foundation is to provide scholarship funding . The Gene Haas Scholarship is for secondary programs that teach CNC Machine Technology or have students who will be attending a CNC machine technology program when they graduate. The funds can also be used for individual NIMS credentials. Up to $2,000 can be used for Sponsorship of a competition your MFG program competes in. (think about funding for next seasons team registration)  Grants will be accepted all year and the current year grants will be closed each year on January 15. The total fund for this category will be dispersed to eligible programs in the following 60 days after grant closing.
ALL SCHOOLS PLEASE fill out the questionnaire.  If you are a public school a grant check can be sent directly to your school. Otherwise scholarship checks must be written to your school’s foundation.

LEAP Results Important Dates LEAP Results FIRST Robotics Teams do more than just build robots. In an intense week-long competition, PNW FRC teams designed and presented ideas to create a new vision for OMSI and the Center For Innovation in order to attract and educate teens in STEM. The LEAP (Linking Engineering and Philanthropy) competition was organized by Team 1540, hosted by OMSI, and prizes provided by Autodesk. FRC Team 4488 Shockwave from Glencoe High School, in Hillsboro, was awarded the 1st place prize and $4000. Their winning proposal was entitled Escape Hall and was a multi-part escape room with the theme of Engineering Through Time . Team 4488 detailed the concept and designed a series of challenges for each of the rooms that combines the fun of team challenges while advancing STEM concepts and how they have progressed through time. We hope you are enjoying your sunshine!  You may be adjusting to a new way of doing school now that Kate Brown has closed schools for the remainder of the school year.  While our society adjusts and limits how we can interact with one another, we hope your team is still finding ways to stay well, connect with your team and communities to support them during this pandemic.   Evaluation Report   ORTOP completed an evaluation report to measure the ways FIRST impacts our youth participants.  We are committed to continuing this work into the future.  Teams are encouraged to use this tool in your work, both to prove the impact of the program and to suggest ways ORTOP can improve our approach.  Stay Connected with us!   All our lives have changed quite drastically over the past month!  As we all practice social distancing, we want to find a way to stay connected with each other.
